Notarial Services

Notarial services information

Please note: These services are for Australian documents, or foreign documents intended for use in Australia. If you have any questions, please contact the Australian Consulate-General Surabaya email: [email protected]

Some Australian Federal and State laws require that a signature on a document be witnessed by an Australian consular officer or have other procedures applied before the document can be used for legal purposes, or in an Australian court of law. These procedures are called “notarial services”. Solicitors, justices of the peace, and notaries public normally perform these functions in Australia. It is also possible for solicitors, justices of the peace or notaries public in Indonesia to also perform these services.

Notarial services are provided by consular officers for Australians. They are also provided in cases where the documents are Australian in origin, or are intended for use in Australia, or have been requested by an Australian Federal, State or Local Government authority.  We are unable to provide notarial services related to visa or migration.

Notarial services are provided by appointment only. Appointment times depend on the service you require. We cannot witness all documents, so to avoid disappointment, please read the information below carefully before attending the Consulate.

Notarial services we can provide are:

  • Certifying copies of original Australian documents or documents intended for use in Australia

  • Issuing an Authentication or Apostille certificate (verifying a signature, stamp, or seal on an original Australian public document). Note there are additional requirements for legalising Australian education documents. See Documents we can legalise for further information

  • Witnessing of signatures on certain Australian documents

  • The taking of Australian Statutory declarations being made for use in Australia by an Australian entity

  • The administering of affidavits, oaths, and affirmations for use in Australian court or legal proceedings

  • Issuing a Certificate of no Impediment to marry in in Indonesia. Please refer to Marriage in Indonesia for further information.

Notarial fees are payable in accordance with the Consular Fees Act of 1955.
